William traveled the world, including the Ballarat gold rush, but returned to England.  Eventually he sailed to Auckland in the Shaw Savill ship Sir George Pollock of only 620 tons in 1859.  His first job was to build a large sawmill at Henderson.  In Auckland he married Christina and three years later settled at Kauri, where other Nova Scotians were farming.
He carved a farm out of the bush and reared five sons and a daughter.  He and his family cheerfully faced the hardships of the pioneers in the days when the only way to get provisions was by swagging them on one's back through the bush tracks from the infant town of Whangarei.
